WHAT TO SEE AND DO in Gran Canaria

In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the capital, you will find Las Canteras beach, an ideal urban beach for swimming, surfing and quietly sunbathing.

In Las Palmas you can also enjoy Vegueta and Triana, historic neighbourhoods with cobblestone streets, where you will find the Cathedral of Santa Ana and the Casa de Colón Museum.

The desert landscape of the dunes next to the sea and the historic lighthouse that marks the southern tip of the island is the most striking item of Maspalomas.

Other picturesque places in Gran Canaria are Puerto de Mogán, the Canarian “little Venice”, with its canals and bridges, quiet beaches and charming marina; the Barranco de Guayadeque, a spectacular valley with natural caves, some inhabited and others converted into restaurants; and Teror, a small town with colonial architecture.

Gran Canaria also offers numerous hiking routes that cross mountains, forests and coasts. In addition, its beaches are perfect for surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, diving and snorkelling.

Regarding its gastronomy, in Gran Canaria the wrinkled potatoes with “mojo” stand out; sancocho, a fish stew with potatoes, sweet potatoes and “mojo”; the famous gofio, toasted cereal flour used in soups and desserts.

But perhaps the most famous thing about Gran Canaria is its Carnival, with colourful parades, music and lots of partying.
